In January 2012, Randy Myers, President of The Neenan Company, sat down to read the Sunday paper. He did so with some trepidation, because he had been barraged with bad news so many times, and such news was threatening the very existence of his company. Over the last few months Colorado’s largest newspaper publication, The Denver Post, had been running a series of inflammatory articles highlighting serious structural problems found at schools built by The Neenan Company. What he read in the news that day added to his problems. The Denver Post had published yet another story, this one about the structural issues identified in at least ten other schools. As Randy took in the news, he reflected on the long journey that The Neenanm Company had faced in the last 40 years of business.

The Neenan Company originally started as a traditional construction company. Their transition to a more collaborative and innovative design-build approach had won them accolades as pioneers and leaders in construction for the past 20 years. They achieved high levels of recognition and attracted a healthy stream of customers and profits. They were recognized widely across the USA for their superior benchmark brand, their innovative techniques, strong employee culture, and ethical working environment. Recently, however, cracks began to emerge in both their buildings and their approach.
