In Small Things, the main character has a number of relationships with other characters that give us some insight into these figures. Using the extract detailed below as a starting point, write an essay in which you discuss the changing nature of the relationship between the main character and Desiree. Focus especially on aspects of narrative perspective and characterisation. The extract you are expected to use begins on p. 46 of the novel with the words, "I think: there are many kinds of love..." The extract ends on p. 47 with the words, -Her mind toils with estimations, discoveries and protests known only to herselfMohlele, 2013:46-47). Before you start writing your essay, you should: 1. Identify how the theme of love is explored in the extract and consider how this is linked to the narrator's perspective on Desiree. Explain how this influences the way in which we as readers see Desiree as a character. 4.
