This section provides the guidelines and assessment criteria for the midterm and final reports. You have the option to choose between two types of final reports for your submission. Option 1 is a research-based report, and Option 2 is a review-based report.  Please note that the midterm report serves as a progress report for the final report. Your task is to present the required progress for the final report preparation, adhering to the provided format. 

1. Requires students to complete a report on a literature review related to the construction industry. Students may select any topic related to construction, collect at least 15 case-study-based publications using the method introduced in Module 1&2, and conduct a meta-analysis of the selected publications. The report should provide an overview of the research status quo, identify potential research gaps, and suggest future research efforts to deepen the understanding of the topic. It should also assist readers who lack a background in the subject in gaining an understanding of the research status quo. Note that the number of references in your report should not be less than 15 as you will need some to back up your statements in the background and introduction.

2. Requires students to complete a report on a case-study-based research project related to the construction industry. Students may choose any topic and identify a construction-related data source that can be quantitatively analyzed. The data source can be any open-access database available on the internet, a published database by researchers, or data generated during the student's work or research. If students are unsure what to analyze, sources for consideration are provided. Please note that even though this is not a literature review, students are expected to read relevant publications and include their findings in the literature review section of the report.

  • The website of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provides valuable data on construction-related fatalities that can be used to explore various research topics. Possible areas of investigation include the relationship between the number of injuries or fatalities and factors such as season, state, age, or project type. An analysis could also be conducted to identify states with higher rates of injuries or fatalities by using population statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau and normalizing the injury/fatality rate. Additionally, examining monthly trends could help identify the most dangerous month for construction and the reasons for this. It is also worth exploring whether the annual injury/fatality rate is increasing or decreasing, and any potential reasons for the trend. Did COVID-19 pose an impact? Did the number increase back to the normal level after the economy was reopened? To expand your analysis, you could consider downloading GDP or personal wage data from the US Census Bureau or the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) websites and exploring whether they are correlated with the fatality and injury rates.
