Assignment Task:

Strengths

Consider the I/O Model of above-average returns – and how an organisation’s strengths (core competencies, abilities, skills, assets – tangible and intangible – and the strategy it employs to utilise those strengths) are. This will give you an analysis of the organisation’s competitive advantage. You may also consider what appear to be the organisation’s strengths and unique resources that it can draw upon to compete with others – as mentioned on its website and communication blogs or such, for example. You might also analyse what others in the industry suggest about their organisation – and compare to the first organisation – as this might provide insights into how competitors see the first organisation (and what they believe they might do better than that first organisation).

Weaknesses

Consider where an organisation might improve (in comparison to other organisations in the industry). This might also be relevant to the resources the organisation has – in comparison to others in the industry (and how competitors might see as the organisation’s weaknesses). Weaknesses would include analysing the people within the organisation, the resources, and procedures and also how the effective the organisation’s practices are – or where there is room for improvement. This might be difficult to analyse from a review of an organisation’s website, but if you compare what an organisation, and their competitors say about themselves, you will see that they are talking about their strengths – but this might also provide some comparisons and possible weaknesses between organisations in the same industry.

Opportunities

A condition in the general environment that, if exploited, helps a company achieve strategic competitiveness. To take an advantage of the opportunity an organisation may need to alter its structure and apply internal efficiencies (utilising existing resources) to enable it to effectively capture an opportunity. It might mean changing focus slightly, by adding a new product to an existing line – but which uses the same resources and abilities of the organisation.

Consider what opportunities the strengths of the organisation open up for them.

Threats

Is a condition in the general environment that may hinder a company’s efforts to achieve strategic competitiveness. This may be a threat from a competitor who develops a similar, more accessible, cheaper, (yet still of value) product. A threat could be related to a technological change, political, economic, or other external change that would affect the industry and therefore the organisation that exists in that industry. Organisations might review trade publications, newspapers, business publications, academic research, attend trade shows, or communicate with suppliers and customer to analyse possible threats.
