A 79-year-old Italian man, Emilio makes an appointment to see his doctor as he is notices that he is going to the bathroom more frequently.  This is worse at night and is now interrupting his sleep as he feels he might be incontinent.  When he does go to urinate he is passing small amounts of urine.

Emilio’s doctor orders blood tests.  His urea, electrolytes and full blood examination are all within normal limits.  The only abnormal result is the prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which is slightly elevated.  Emilio is referred onto an urologist.

The urologist asks Emilio questions about how often he experiences incomplete emptying, frequency, intermittency, urgency, weak stream, straining and nocturia.  He also performed a rectal examination, finding that Emilio had a moderately enlarged firm but smooth prostate.

It was recommended that Emilio undergo a laser transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).  Emilio has agreed to have this procedure.
