In the beginning of his short story Lamb to the Slaughter, Roald Dahl characterizes Mary as a devoted and loving housewife. This is made clear to the reader by Mary's behaviour before Patrick comes home and in how she treats Patrick (before he tells her 'the news', obviously). Mary makes sure that before Patrick gets home, there are "...two tall glasses, soda water, [and] whisky" ready for him so that he can have a drink as soon as he gets home. Roald Dahl also writes that Mary would -Now and again...glance up at the clock...merely to please herself that each minute gone by made it nearer the time when he would come home," as she would wait for Patrick to come home from work. When Patrick does come home, he is noticeably curt in his responses to her. Despite his somewhat rude and thstant behaviour, Mary offers to make him a dinner. When Patrick tells her that he doesn't want her to, she replies: "I'll fix it anyway, and then you can have it or not, as you like." Mary is excited for her husband to come home; she makes sure the house is clean for him anti thinks am ready for him. Even though he is cold to her she offers to make him a dinner, knowing there a good chance he won't even eat it. The fact that she offers to do this, despite his behaviour and the fact that she is happy to do it, shows the reader that Mary is a very devoted and loving housewife (at the beginning of the story).
