This course is a fusion of theory and practice. That is, the theory informs the practice. Because of the Coronavirus crisis (see Moodle), this term you will work with a hypothetical client. There are five options: all commercial start-ups (or recent start-ups) with five or fewer (notional) employees. Individually, you choose ONE of these and this will remain your focus all term. 

1. Environmental scanning report (30 percent) - Individual 
In this 1,000—1,200-word report (a suggested template will be provided) you must identify your notional client and the problem/s and/or opportunities faced. You must then undertake (desktop only) research on the environment into which strategy is to be projected (e.g. political, economic, social, logistical environment, etc.) and identify resultant issues and dynamics that might complicate the strategic design. For instance, low wage growth in a given population segment might make it difficult for your client to launch a new line of (whatever)... The word ‘scan’ suggests a process that is more broad than deep, and so the objective here is ‘coverage’: that is, identifying, prioritising, and discussing all key variables at play in the environment. Naturally, you will need to offer reasons (evidence) for each variable. For example, if relevant (and among other things) you might point to uncertainty with respect to given transport policy. Perhaps the client is operating in an area where there is soon to be a significant disruption to the road infrastructure. Think Light Rail! You would need to briefly elaborate on such factors (citing sources), and discuss relevance to the client. This assessment is all about identifying issues and opportunities, with the best work also tentatively suggesting a possible strategic approach. What you do not do is formulate a definitive strategy. That is for Assessment 2. 

2. Strategic Framework (40 percent) - Individual 
Based on the issues facing your client (as identified for Assessment 1), you are to independently offer a 1500-word discussion document that proposes and defends a multi-faceted conceptual framework (i.e. a framework featuring intersecting theories/models/concepts) aimed at addressing the problematic/s. Again, a suggested template will be provided. In detailing the nature and relevance of two or three intersecting/overlapping theories, models, or concepts, the emphasis of the assessment is to have you think holistically (in terms of achieving ‘coverage’ over the problematic) and strategically (that is, deeply and conceptually, rather than tactically). 

3. Strategy document and in-class presentation (30 percent) – Group 
Based on your initial choice of client, for this 2,500-word-final (group) assessment you will form groups four to five. Based on a template to be provided, your group will offer a full strategy document. As a group, you will consider the best elements of individual work (in Assessments 1 and 2) and thereby make a thoughtful final determination as to the best remedial strategy. For Assessment 3, marking emphasis will be placed on discussion of the problem/opportunity; assessment of environment; the relevance and caliber of strategic framework offered; and selection and alignment of tactics. In Week 9, all groups will have the chance to offer a brief (five-minute) synopsis of their plan—with a focus on problems, opportunities, strategies proposed, and tactics to be employed. While not an ‘assessed’ component of the course, this brief presentation his will provide an opportunity for further guidance from your tutor (and peers) and should be taken very seriously
