Highlights
Background:
The year is 2026. President Trump has been back in power in the US for two years, and is implementing a number of populist policies including the withdrawal of the US from the United Nations. Following suit is Prime Minister Nigel Farage, who has signalled the UK will pull out too. Australia is being pressured to do the same, and is likely to agree. China, Russia and France are likely to stay, and are recommending Japan and India take the vacant permanent places (the P5) on the UN Security Council.
It is November of 2026 and Jamie Lee Ross’ Advance Party has won the election in a landslide victory. Prime Minister Ross has promised New Zealand will also withdraw from the UN. He has requested MFAT prepare a white paper on New Zealand’s membership of the UN. Should we follow the lead of the US and UK, and leave? If we stay, should we push for a modified UN, and what would it look like? If we leave, do we need to replace the UN with something else, and what would it look like?
Task:
As a senior analyst at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, you gave been charged with writing one policy document of a minimum of 3,000 words. It will be classified, for the PM and members of his cabinet only. You have been directed to form a research group of 6 MFAT people (including you) to help you put this policy together. Along with the other members of your group, you will present your initial research and recommendations to the Minister of Foreign Affairs before you write up the final policy document, which you will do alone. The group presentation will be 10-15 minutes and cover your argument for staying/leaving/modifying the UN. The policy document will outline that argument in detail and may include appendices as you see fit (appendices are not included in the word count).
The PM wants New Zealand to leave the United Nations. What would you advise the Government do? Leave? Stay? Or modify the UN somehow? How would your policy affect New Zealand and our relationship with our defence and trading partners? Write a 3,000 word policy recommendation giving your answer.
