You are a graduate registered nurse working on a 20-bed medical ward (Ward 2S) of the regional public hospital “Broken River”. After six months of fulltime work, you feel comfortable with the routines and culture of the ward. Today you have been allocated four patients. Three of the patients allocated to you are in a four bedroom – Maryanne has been allocated the fourth patient in the room. You are also providing care for a patient in a single room located directly opposite from the four bedroom. Patient allocation Your patient allocation is as follows: Elizabeth Harris Miss Harris is an 86-year-old resident of a residential aged care facility. She was admitted with LLL pneumonia. Miss Harris is a Type 2 diabetic and has vascular dementia. She requires full assistance with all ADL’s including assisting with all meals. All fluids must be thickened as she is at risk of aspiration. Robert (Bob) Jones Robert who prefers to be called Bob, is a 73-year-old retired painter. He lives with his wife June and is a keen fisherman. Bob was admitted for investigations of his anaemia. He had an OGD and colonoscopy yesterday. Bob is in a single room. Bianca Jackson Bianca is a 22-year-old graduate surveyor. She is a Type 1 diabetic. Bianca was admitted last evening with ketoacidosis after her pump failed. She is on an insulin and potassium infusion. Devi Anand Mrs Anand is a 67-year-old was admitted with lower leg cellulitis. Mrs Anand has peripheral vascular disease, Parkinson’s and heart failure. She is receiving IV antibiotics. She is keen to go home, as her husband is unwell. She frequently experiences postural hypotension. Mrs Anand has been assessed as a high falls risk
