Aim

In this practical you will examine two possum species that inhabit urban environments in Sydney; the Ringtail possum and the Brushtail possum. The aim of this assessment is to collect digestive system morphological data from possums to enable a comparison between the possums and the rat, species with variable diets and evolutionary histories.

The report will be prepared in the form of a scientific paper for submission to Australian Mammology. The Journal guidelines for preparation of report are available here. The following is a little more information specific to the report not addressed by the journal guidelines.

Title and affliates: As outlined in the journal guidelines and/or observed in an Australian Mammology article.

Abstract: As outlined for a research article in the journal guidelines.

Introduction (2 pages max): The introduction should begin by defining the broader question/area to which your story is related. This is then followed by background information to provide the reader with sufficient knowledge to understand the topic. Finally, you should include the aim of the study. Length is not the important factor here. Your ability to convey the background information clearly and concisely is what will be assessed.

Materials and methods: (1.5 pages max): A methods section should provide enough detail to enable the work to be repeated by someone else. Source of materials are also included. In this report you must include a detailed methodology for dissection procedure for marsupial, how the measurements of digestive tract organs were obtained and a description of data analysis including statistical tests. Refer to the possum dissection instructions on iLearn.

Results (Text not including the figures and table - 2 pages max): Results are best presented as graphs, figures and tables. These are supported by descriptive text that refers reader to appropriate data. In this report you should include:

1. Graphs illustrating the key differences in the size (length, width or surface area) of the digestive tract of the three species

2. Images of the digestive tract for the three species.

3. Results of statistical analyses integrated into the text description.

Statistical analyses:

There are a number of different stats tests you could employ here to explore your data. You can also use a range of stats programs. I suggest you use one you are already familiar with.

The following are some suggestions:

A. Comparison the lengths the small intestine to the hindgut for each species. Is the hindgut longer than the foregut? I suggest a paired t-test for each species.

B. Does the proportion of the total gastrointestinal tract taken up by the hindgut vary between species? I suggest a one-way ANOVA followed by post-hoc tests of pair-wise comparisons.
