There is a new popular science magazine entitled General Microbiology! The chief editor, I, is looking out for exciting microbiology stories from early-career journalists about recent discoveries in microbiology that have significance to society. The editorial team want to find articles that tell a relatable story about a new research discovery in microbiology to a popular science audience, that still clearly and simply communicates scientific information. Your job is to write a 2-page popular-science magazine article about an impact of microbiology on modern society. You will need to identify and focus on a specific recent discovery or development in Microbiology. You have journalistic freedom on choosing an angle that has an impact on society, industry or the environment. So, please follow these key steps:

(1) First, identify any microbiology topic area of interest that is important to society. This will help you narrow your search for a new discovery or development within your area of interest. You are encouraged to be original and avoid just the latest 'hot topic'. If you have a general area that grabs your interest (e.g., amongst the modules listed in the General Microbiology program listed in the subject outline), you can start narrowing your search further, by using UTS library and IT resources to identify recently published scientific review articles in the area, which should provide you with backoround and some ideas to heln vou

(2) Identify a recent scientific discovery or development to focus on (within your chosen topic area), by identifying one or a few key research articles published in the last year (i.e. published in the current year or the previous one only). Do this by searching the primary research and scientific literature using UTS library and IT resources. It can help to select your microbiology research article(s) that have been published in high-profile microbiology or multi-disciplinary journals [use Library resources to help you do this]. If you cannot find a discovery or development that you wish to write about in this focus area, then return to step 1 above and select another area.

(3) Once you have found a discovery or development that has happened in the last year, investigate this and the scientific background further, by reading the most appropriate scientific literature, so you have a good knowledge of the area and understand the basis and importance of the discovery.

(4) In your own words entirely, write and produce images/figures to make your article. Draft it and then revise it to make your article as clearly written, scientifically accurate, and as interesting as you can. Format it so that it would be suitable for professional publication in a popular science magazine.
