Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), predominantly, acetate, propionate and butyrate are produced by microorganisms that reside as part of the gut microbiome when they ferment carbohydrates and fibres (Maslowski et al 2009, Thorburn et al 2014, Huffnagle 2014). 

Studies showed that these short chain fatty acids are essential for cell function controlling growth.
