The Assignment:
This assignment is based on Session 2, the Shakespearean Authorship Question (SAQ) and the Analysis of Competing Hypothesis (ACH) method. In your paper, please answer:

1) Conventional or “orthodox” scholars assert that William Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon wrote the plays and poems traditionally ascribed to him (Hypothesis 1). Many people whom I respect and like also endorse this theory. As you gathered, however, I lean towards “reasonable doubt” on the SAQ, i.e. I believe that someone else besides the individual from Stratford wrote these works (Hypothesis 2). Please tell me, which SAQ Hypothesis do you favor?

2) Whatever your view, is there room for reasonable doubt? How do you reach that conclusion? Please tell me which three to six facts (taken either from your notes or from anywhere else do you find most “diagnostic” in coming to a decision? In other words, discuss why you find the evidence that you selected dispositive/decisive. Are you using internal or external evidence (or both)? How are you balancing what we know with “absent evidence”?

3) Optional: ACH is a tool for thinking, not a Procrustean bed for “facts” and not a “magic answer machine”. Its most useful function is often to insist that you repeatedly revise and improve the quality of your hypotheses in light of new evidence (present or absent). The SAQ Hypotheses above are not be “MECE”. Therefore, if you want, you can propose an Hypothesis 3 – a new Authorship hypothesis that better fits the key evidence that you selected.

Here are your tasks to prepare for the session. The announcement before class read:
• Step One, to do before class: get ready! First, get ready for intelligent video viewing (a handy skill in a post-literate, digital age?). As you watch each video, please write
down what you think of as "killer facts" either decisively supporting or decisively disputing/casting doubt on either hypothesis. In short, you will be watching videos
and gathering evidence. You should bring these notes to class, and they will make your individual assignment infinitely easier.
• Step Two, to do before class: get acquainted with the question! Watch a few introductory videos; everyone in the class will watch these and they last about an hour in total:
-The role of belief in interpretation

-Shakespeare and The Case of the Missing Playwright
