How do viruses spread through a population? From Coronavirus to bird flu, humans are surrounded by deadly viruses. Given the ubiquity of air travel, it isn’t surprising when people die from a virus; instead, it’s surprising that not everyone has yet!
In this project, you will be able to explain how to use exponential growth and logarithms to model how a virus spreads through a population and evaluate how various factors influence the speed and scope of an outbreak
Standards:
F-LE.A.4 For exponential models, express as a logarithm the solution to abct = d where a, c, and d are numbers and the base b is 2, 10, or e; evaluate the logarithm using technology.
F-BF.A.1 Write a function that describes a relationship between two quantities.
F-BF.B.5 (+) Understand the inverse relationship between exponents and logarithms and use this relationship to solve problems involving logarithms and exponents.
F-IF.C.7 Graph functions expressed symbolically and show key features of the graph; by hand in simple cases and using technology for more complicated cases.
This project has been designed to evaluate students’ ability to:
• Write an equation to represent exponential growth; describe the effect of each parameter on the overall model
• Graph an exponential function
• Solve exponential equations using a variety of methods, including logs
Final product/ submission description:
• You will be submitting the final project as a Power Point Presentation or Prezi. You can show your work on a word document specially for the graphs, take a screenshot, and insert it as an image to your presentation.

Part 1:

Part 2: Spread it
1- In a small town of 200 people, imagine one person is infected with a contagious virus, and that anyone who’s infected spreads the virus to one new person each week. Using the table below, show how the infected and healthy populations change during the first ten weeks of the outbreak.Sketch a graph using a grid paper or using technology. Write an exponential function that represents the number of people infected.

3- Some viruses are more contagious than others. Instead of passing the virus to one new person, imagine each infected person passes it to three. How will this affect how long it takes for the virus to infect everyone on earth?
