What is the standpoint theory?

The standpoint theory is a critical theory derived primarily from the work of Dorothy Smith, Donna Haraway, Patricia Collins, and Sandra Harding, and in short contends that knowledge is situated in physical and individual experiences. The theory calls for us to take those individual stories and experiences into account, (especially those that are from marginalized people who are outside of the dominant narrative) then we begin to formulate a web of knowledge that is more reflective of reality and representative of the culture as a whole. Additionally, the standpoint theory was developed in the feminist study as a way of explaining how those with power have the most influence over societal positions and norms.

For this assignment you will write a first-person “research essay” (you may use “I”) that applies the lesson, “The Four Components of the Standpoint Theory.” Your paper requires citing research (which is explained further in the instructions) and you must provide the sources in APA format both in-text and in the "References" section. In short, you must support your claims, and provide attribution.

The essay should be double spaced and approximately 4 pages in length (not counting the references or title page), 12pt. You will use Times New Roman font type, and 2 - 4 sources are required, but you may need more. You will use subheadings, centered in bold, for each of the four points in the standpoint theory in your essay. You do not need an abstract for this paper.
