Question 1

Use the information in nhanes1.sav. You should use SPSS to calculate the sample statistics you  will need to do this question, but for parts (a) and (c) you are required to do the rest of the  calculations by hand, using a calculator.

(a)Construct a 95% confidence interval for the population mean amount of  money spent at the supermarket in the last 30 days (CBD070)

(b)Check the appropriate conditions and assumptions needed to calculate a  confidence interval around the population mean of amount of money spent at the  supermarket.

(c)The researcher knows that the population average amount of money spent  by an adult at the supermarket in the last 30 days is $480. She believes that men, on  average, spend less than this amount. Is there evidence to support this claim, based on  this sample? In performing this test:

i. State appropriate hypotheses (define any symbols used).

ii. Using an appropriate formula and showing all working, calculate the value of a  suitable test statistic for this test.

iii. Without using SPSS, calculate the P-value of this test.

iv. Interpret the P value and write a meaningful conclusion at the 1% level of  significance.

(d)Check your answers for part (c) by finding the value of the test statistic and  the P-value using SPSS. Include SPSS output in your answer and comment on the  comparison with the hand calculated values. Explain any differences.

Question 2

Use the information in nhanes1.sav. You should use SPSS to calculate any sample statistics you  will need to do this question, but for parts (b) and (d) you are required to do the rest of the  calculations by hand, using a calculator.

According to US health data, 20% of the population never consume milk products. A  researcher believes that the proportion of women who never consume milk products is higher  than this.

(a) What is the variable of interest to the researcher?

(b) Based on the sample data, is there evidence to support the researcher’s  claim that more than 20% of women never consume milk products? To answer this  question, complete the following steps:

i. State the appropriate hypotheses (define any symbols used).

ii. Check the conditions and assumptions for this test.

iii. Calculate the test statistic for this test.

iv. Calculate the P-value for this test.

v. Interpret the P-value and write a meaningful conclusion in the context of this  situation.

(c) If the researcher wants to be 95% confident that the margin of error of the  estimate is within 0.05 of the true proportion of women, what minimum sample size is  required? Use a conservative method in determining sample size.

(d) The researcher decides that instead of using a conservative method (as  required in part (c)), she will use information from the data provided in nhanes1.sav to  decide how many women she would need to survey (keeping the same level of  confidence and margin of error). What is the impact of the decision?
