Assignment Task

Task 1: Describe the theoretical foundations of the Leadership Tasks Survey, apply the survey and analyze its results.

Apply the Leadership Tasks Survey (LTS / Deutsch: Fragebogen Führungsaufgaben - FFA) to a minimum of three subordinates (applying the follower version) or the peer version to three colleagues (applying the peer version, which is shorter than the follower version and just in- cludes the You-Level of the LTM). Please either use the online version of the LTS or enter the data in a Excel template and upload it (the upload is only needed when you have used the paper-based versions).

You need to upload two documents (Excel LTS data sheet (only if you use the paper-based version) and your LTS report). You’ll find all relevant LTS sheets on the Principles of Leader- ship page in the Organizer.

If you are a full-time student, please try to gather the LTS input from your former team members.

Write an empirical report for the results like you would do in the empirical part of a Master Thesis/ a scientific article. Please apply APA style for whole text as well as for your tables and your references!

Write 7-10 pages. Upload your survey data (Excel) and include your report in the development plan.

Task 2: Individual Development Plan

Define an individual development plan.

Define a plan for the detailed leadership subtasks (e.g. goal definition, coaching…) on the YOU-Level that you need to develop based on your assessment. If you do not have current leadership responsibilities, focus on your peers and the following tasks: Goal Definition, Goal Clarification, Interaction, Information, Feedback, Coaching, Meeting Optimization. Select two leadership tasks for your development plan.

If you are currently not employed, you might consider focussing on the leadership task coach- ing only. If this is your choice, you need to conduct at least two coachings (two coachees) with four coaching sessions each. The sessions need to be documented in separate protocols.

Write a minimum of 8-10 pages. The maximum length depends on your personal development needs. Try to answer all questions that are asked in the guideline below and try to stick to the described steps of the development plan. Do not copy content from your development plan for Leading Self.

Do not write two separate reports for the two tasks. Describe the leadership tasks in one step of the development plan (e.g. Step 1: 1.1 Goal Orientation 1.2 Coaching).

Step 1: The Leadership Tasks that you have selected for development: This is short sum- mary/the conclusions that you derive from the data analysis above. Please also compare the results of the LPS with the self-evaluation that you have done during the Principles of Leader- ship seminar! Also consider your NEO 5 & EQi results, if they are relevant.

Give an explanation why you need to develop these tasks. It is also possible to select tasks independent of your LTS scores, if they are more feasible for implementation.

Step 2: Identify the current costs and future benefits. (Developing motivation for the change process.)

Describe a typical situation where your current behavior is not working to meet your needs satisfactorily. Try to get into the memory by focusing on the details until it feels like it is hap- pening again. Be aware of your behavior and emotions as you experience what it is like to be you now with your current leadership level.

I have selected this leadership task for development because my current skill level in this area negatively affects my life in the following ways: ...

Now visualize what that would be like for you in a year when you have already developed your selected competency. Develop your vision by focusing on the details until you can feel like it is happening. How would you be able to deal with the situation if you were more skilled? What would that be like for you? How would you be able to perform as a leader?

Step 3: Carefully define the behaviors to change in a concrete leadership interaction. (Clearly define the changes in your actions, thoughts and emotions)

  1. What are the changes you visualize in your behavior due to your having improved your se- lected leadership behavior? Write down one to three sentences about how your behavior would be different in a specific leadership situation.
  2. Now write down exactly what those changes in your actions, thoughts and interactions would Try to define them for each leadership task separately. Try to be specific as possi- ble, especially for your thoughts. Start with the thoughts.

Example (for the specific situation you are in now):

My thoughts regarding writing this term paper are: “This is really helping me to change my behavior and to become a better leader / co-worker. I will be able to start changing my behav- ior after I have written the term paper and therefore create a sustainable impact on my profes- sional life.”

My emotions would be: “Writing this paper makes me feel very satisfied as I am doing some- thing with a strong purpose for myself.”

My actions would be: “Start now setting up a work plan. Then start and do the different work steps on time.”

Step 4: Create a plan to get to the goal.

Who are you going to practice developing this leadership tasks with? When are you going to practice?

Where are you going to practice?

Step 5: Conduct a Support and Obstacles Analysis. (Identify the resources and barriers to developing the selected leadership behavior)

  1. List your internal competencies/strengths for change and how you can use them:
  2. List your external sources for change and how you can use them
  1. List your internal obstacles/personal development areas to change and how you can overcome them:
  2. List your external obstacles to change and how you can overcome

Step 6: Design self-monitoring measures.

Please define measures that are specific for the changes in your leadership behavior and the tools that you can use to assess them. Do not use the same measures as for Leading-Self.

Step 7: Identify additional support sources for training, experience and information, including persons who can support you!

Step 8: Develop a Working Plan.

Task 3: Report your Development Status

Report the status of your action steps and your personal achievements in becoming a Good Leader in three 2-3 pages leadership status reports. Upload the reports.

For the last report please reapply the LTS for your followers/peers.

Grading

Task 1 is rated for 20% and tasks 2 and 3 for 40?ch. Basis for the grading is not the status of your personal change or your success, but the effort you did invest in the implementation as well as in writing the plan and the reports. There will be no single grades for the assignments, but a written feedback for each as well as for the status reports. After finishing the seminar you will receive a final grade.
