Leadership does not happen in a vacuum, but is being influenced and influencing the context. As such this assessment requires you to theoretically analyse a leader's leadership approach during a particular event (e.g., President Xi Jinping during the coronavirus; General Motors CEO Mary Barra during the GM strikes). This can be any event from January 2019 onwards. We want you to choose 1 leader and 1 leadership theory and analyse to what extent the leader is displaying this leadership theory during this event. We would like you to do this from multiple perspectives the leader, their followers, and the media in general. All these groups may have differing opinions of if the leader is truly an ethical/ transformational/ charismatic leader. On top of the theory, we want you to analyse how power and privilege are playing a role in their leadership approach (see Liu's work on servant and authentic leadership as an example). You might choose to examine gender, sexual orientation, race, nationality, age, education, socio-economic status, disability. Liu argues that the leader's race inhibits people from truly seeing their leader as a servant leader. Is this the case with your leader and the leadership theory you have chosen? Examine if their demographics create obstacles for the leader to be seen in a certain light or if they are pressured to conform to a pre-determined way of leading. For example, if you are analysing Sherryl Sandberg you might focus on gender and authentic leadership. If you are choosing Jack Ma, you might look at nationality and education and charismatic leadership. If you are looking at Michelle Obama, you might examine race and gender and servant leadership. Overall you need to examine if/how these influence the way they lead and how they are perceived as leaders by others. Structure of Analysis:- Introduction (approx. 200 words): Introduce the leader, the event, the theory you are using, and what you are going to cover in the analysis. Theoretical and Contextual Framing (approx. 600 words): Use this section to highlight the leadership theory you are using and the dimensions of that leadership theory. Secondly, talk about the contextual (demographic) framing of your piece to set up your analysis. - Analysis Paragraphs (approx. 1,400 words): Cover 2 or 3 dimensions of the leadership approach (for example if you were analysing servant leadership, you might choose to focus on authentic self, transforming influence, and voluntary subordination). To what extent does the leader conform to this dimension (why / why not)? Your supporting evidence for your examples will be from the media sources. Depth is more important than breadth here so really analyse why the leader might (not be) showing transforming influence. Interwoven in here needs to be an analysis of demographics and how this influences the way the leader leads and/or how they are perceived. For instance, using the servant leadership example of authentic self, you might draw on the literature on gender, authenticity and leadership to examine how these interact and the influence that has on your leader. - Conclusion (approx. 200 words): Based on your analysis, is your leader seen as a leader? Did power and privilege have any role to play in how they were seen as a leader? Media Sources: We suggest that you find a leader who also has followers easily accessible online (i.e. CEO and top management team; Political leader and their members; Sports captain and their teammates). Search their social media history for that event and see how/if the leader is influencing their followers (e.g. how did the Sandberg's reaction to the Facebook privacy scandal influence the messages her followers sent?). Secondly, look at how the media has reported on their leadership approach remember that there is right wing and left wing media which allows you to juxtapose positions. You can use social media posts, newspapers, company press release, television, radio, YouTube, etc. Any information that is out there you can use if you are able to reference it.
