Purpose

This assessment will provide you with the opportunity to apply your learning and reading in this subject to a scenario that requires effective communication skills. The focus of this assessment is on a review of the literature concerning communication. You will be able to choose ONE topic to explore from a list that interests you. For this to be authentic for your learning experience, you will need to consider a situation where you have had a communication barrier or problems communicating in your professional work. That will help you to remember the situation and how it manifested. Then, you will explore the literature about how best to work with this given situation. Communication is central to our role in professional practice. For health care it is the basis of all interaction, assessment and treatment. If you are working in any service industry, it will be important. By exploring the literature for your chosen topic, you may be able to consider how the situation could have had different outcomes. Or consider or advise others how to use this information into the future. Thus, you should experience professional growth and be more confident in future situations.

Task details

For this assessment you will complete an assignment on one of six topics. You will later present the results of this assignment as a Zoom presentation using PowerPoint (see Assessment 1: Oral presentation).

Instructions

This assignment is effectively a review of the literature. As such, we require you to provide a write up of your search strategy and a critical overview of the available literature. Be clear about which topic you have chosen by using this as a title heading. Then use the heading structure for the assignment indicated by the rubric for the assignment.

1. Effective communication when working with a colleague who has mental ill health in the workplace
2. Effective communication with people with mental ill health who require de-escalation of verbal aggression
3. Inclusive teaching communication strategies with students (primary, secondary, tertiary) with a mental health or behavioural issue
4. Speech, language and communication needs in youth mental health. (you may want to focus on depression, anxiety OR psychosis and its overall impact)
5. Communication strategies used when assessing an older person for mental ill health (you may want to focus on depression, anxiety, psychosis OR dementia)
6. Communication strategies used when assessing a person who has co-occurring needs, relating to mental ill health and co-occurring substance use and is currently under the influence of a substance (you may want to focus on alcohol, opiates OR methamphetamine).

1. Select a Topic: Choose one topic from a list of six communication-focused scenarios, based on a personal or professional experience involving communication barriers.

2. Literature Review: Conduct a critical review of relevant literature using academic databases such as Scopus, CINAHL, ERIC, or ProQuest. Include a write-up of the search strategy.

3. Assignment Write-Up: Prepare a structured report summarizing findings, demonstrating understanding of evidence-based communication strategies, and offering insights or recommendations for practice.

4. Presentation Component: Present the literature review using PowerPoint and Zoom (as per Assessment 1), highlighting key findings and properly citing all sources.

5. Headings and Structure: Follow the rubric for assignment headings and clearly indicate the chosen topic as the main heading.
