Teaching Others to Drive a Heavy Vehicle

Assessment tasks are used to measure your understanding and underpinning skills and knowledge of the overall unit/s of competency. When undertaking any written assessment tasks, you are to ensure that they focus on the set tasks and that all written work is legible.

Prior to commencing the assessments, the assessor will explain each assessment task and the terms and conditions relating to the submission of the assessment task. It is important that you understand and adhere to the terms and conditions and address each assessment task fully. If any assessment task is not fully addressed, then the assessment task will be returned to you for re-submission.

Unit Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct individual and group instruction, demonstrate work skills, and assess the success of training and one’s own training performance, using existing learning resources in a safe and comfortable learning environment.

It emphasises the training as being driven by the work process and context and applies to a person working under supervision as a work skill instructor in a wide range of settings not restricted to training organizations.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit, including:

• Carrying out a minimum of three training sessions, involving demonstrating and instructing particular work skills for at least two different individuals or small groups, with each session addressing:
  • Different learning objectives.
  • A range of delivery techniques and effective communication skills appropriate to the audience.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge to effectively complete the task outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

• Learner characteristics and needs.
• The content and requirements of the relevant learning program, and/or the delivery plan.
• The sources and availability of relevant learning resources and learning materials.
• The content of relevant learning resources and learning materials.
• Training techniques that enhance learning, and when to use them.
• Introductory knowledge of learning principles and learning styles.
• Key workplace health and safety (WHS) issues in the learning environment, including:
  • Roles and responsibilities of key personnel.
  • Responsibilities of learners.
  • Relevant policies and procedures, including hazard identification, risk assessment, reporting requirements, safe use of equipment and emergency procedures.
  • Risk controls for the specific learning environment.

Develop low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours in others

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to develop low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours in others.

It includes demonstrating applicable low risk heavy vehicle driving rules, regulations and strategies to drivers, delivering training on low risk heavy vehicle driving principles and monitoring and maintaining low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours of drivers. It also includes evaluating drivers on their low risk heavy vehicle driving competence, reviewing evaluation of driver low risk heavy vehicle driving competence dealing with behavioural barriers to learning, developing heavy vehicle operation and control skills, and interpreting and applying regulatory requirements and road law expertise.

It also includes developing higher-order cognitive and technical skills, such as hazard perception, correctly reading a driving environment and responding appropriately, exercising risk management strategies that contribute to low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours, and meeting community expectations.

Work is performed without supervision. Developing low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours in others involves the application of learning principles of different cohorts, instructional methods, training competence and experience, higher-order heavy vehicle driver expertise, navigation skills, road law expertise, routine procedures and regulatory requirements across a range of operational situations and a variety of driving contexts.
