Highlights
Question 1
Prepare a technical report on your investigation of 21 cm radio emission and the Galactic rotation curve. The report should be aimed at someone with similar background knowledge to yourself, but who has not done this specific project – for example, one of your counterparts on the PIRATE project.
The word limit for Question 1 is 2000 words together with appropriate figures and tables. Further guidance on length and scope is given in the section 'Question 1: Guidance and word limit'.
In preparing your report, you may wish to refer to the guidance given in the Scientific communication section of the Full Moon skills week.
The report should be prepared, and will be marked, according to the following structure and headings.
Title
Produce an appropriate descriptive title for the report that succinctly describes the work. The title should be interesting and informative. (Advisory limit 15 words)
Introduction
Briefly introduce the report summarising the astrophysical background, making reference where appropriate to the module materials.
Clearly state the specific overall objective of the investigation. This could be in the form of a hypothesis to be tested, or a clearly worded research question.
Methods and results
Describe fully: (i) the methods used to collect and analyse the data and (ii) the results obtained.
Your methods should include:
A brief description of the instrumental set up of ARROW.
A summary of the observations that your observing team made (in the form of a table if you wish). This should include all relevant information for all of the spectra you took. If your observing session did not deliver actual data then you should include a summary, as far as this is available to you, from the actual data set you used in your investigation.
An explanation of the analysis that you carried out on the spectra you obtained and on the archive spectra.
Include plots showing: the spectra that you obtained along each line of sight you observed; the archival data along lines of sight to the inner Galactic plane; the rotation curve for the Galaxy that you have determined; and your calculated positions for each of the hydrogen clouds. Also include tables showing: the measured speeds, corrected speeds and calculated distances from the Galactic centre for each of the clouds along each line of sight you observed plus the ones you obtained from others’ measurements on the forum; and the maximum radial velocities, distances and rotation speeds determined from the archive spectra used to plot the Galactic rotation curve.
You also do not need to explain the specific functionality of the Stellarium software.
Discussion and interpretation
In words, present a discussion and interpretation of the data presented in the method and results section. Give a critical interpretation of any features seen in the spectra, the rotation curve and in the plot of hydrogen cloud positions. Comment on the distribution of the hydrogen clouds, and give a quantitative estimate of the accuracy of your findings. You may also include one or more additional figures, or annotate the diagrams presented earlier in the report.
This discussion should be based on your thoughts and how these fit with the project materials and/or published material. It is not necessary to use material published outside The Open University, but provided it is correctly referenced you will be credited for including it.
Conclusions
Summarise the work in no more than 6 succinct sentences. These may be in the form of a bulleted list.
