Highlights
Debate
Based on the readings for the first three weeks of this course, (listed below) prepare the opening statements for the affirmative and opposing sides in a debate on the following proposition:
To increase community safety and deter crime, Australia should adopt a public sex offender registry list.
Each student will submit in writing the opening statement for the affirmative (600 words approx) and the opposition (600 words approx) and the introduction, conclusion and rebuttal – a total of 1500 words (+/- 10%).
So, the affirmative team has to argue that implementing a public SOR will increase community safety and deter crime; the negative (against) team will argue that implementing a public SOR will NOT increase community safety and deter crime. DO NOT forget to rebute the arguments made by the affirmative team before presenting the negative team's arguments.
You should draw on concepts concerned with the principles of punishment and sentencing as well as arguments based on theoretical understandings of punishment.
