2. The simulation file for the Point to Point links model
3. Video presentation - to demonstrate how your implemented models work
4. The technical report on Network layer and Data Link layer in OSI model.
 
Please Note: The filenames must follow the convention described above, and use your own ID number to replace “12345678”;
 
All the four files must be submitted onto WebLearn before the deadline, which is declared in the face page of this coursework specification.
 
Task A - Network Simulation Models/Simulations
(50% of the CWK in total)
1. Task Description
 
The assignment requires you to model a WAN using the COMNET III software. The assignment requires you to connect the Chester subnet, Oxford subnet and Plymouth subnet using (a) a WAN cloud; and (b) Point To Point links. The assignment intends to make use of Bus LAN, Token ring LAN, subnets, the WAN cloud, Network Devices and Point To Point links, and the routing protocols.
 
You need to set up the structure of a network to support the various operations and in particular video conferencing using the multicast backbone. Part of the work also includes answering some technical questions.
 
This assignment is based on chapter 8, “Modeling Wide Area Networks”, in pages 36 to 56 (inclusive) from the PDF file available from the section Learning Materials of the WebLearn (filename: Comnet_CH7-8.pdf). 1. Task Description
Write a technical report about Network layer and Data Link layer in the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model, which should be the culmination of good literature search work carried out through using a good mix of sources: Book, journals, industry white papers, research outputs of organisations, web resources that have provenance, and textbooks.
 
It should describe the general technical content for the OSI model, especially present and explain technical in depth looking at the issues about operations of Data Link (MAC and LLC) and Network Layers, etc. This technical report should not exceed 2000 words in length (excluding Cover page, Contents page and References).
 
The report structure and quality will also be marked, based on the criteria of quality of communication/expression and overall structure – organisation of material and quality of documentation.
