The introduction of advanced manufacturing systems and technologies that combine a range of additive and subtractive techniques, has enabled engineers to move beyond standard designs and geometry. Moreover, the advancement of algorithms that are designed to optimise geometry based on the component or structure boundary conditions has enabled a new class of geometry design and manufacturing.

In order to adopt complex geometries and new manufacturing and construction techniques, engineers need to be familiar with the various aspects of generative design and, in particular, how commercial applications such as ANSYS implement these.

In your groups, you will study the effects of altering the fixed supports boundary conditions and materials on the optimised topology of a support structure to be used as a proof-of-concept for new walk-way designs across the La Trobe University Level 2 Links. You will perform a static structural analysis and combine it with topology optimisation to show where material that does not affect the stresses developed in the structurecould potentially be removed.

Objectives and Specifications
The aim of this project is to work within a group environment and conduct a topology optimisation study on the support structure. You will need to perform the optimisation on the support structure using two different materials and two fixed support conditions. The topology optimisation study will then be orientated around reducing the mass of the structure, retaining only 10% and 25% of the total mass. The studies you need to perform are listed in Table 1 below.
