Assignment Task: The task - TOUR1001 The assignment is the write-up of your research about the destination.  The write-up of your project should be 2700 words in length, plus or minus 10%.  You must begin collecting your information for this assignment in Week 1. You must spend a large part of your preparation time for this assignment doing your own research about the destination.  Students who do not use the guidelines provided for the assignment have great difficulty with this assignment and are likely to fail it.  In the past, students who have failed the course are those who have not allowed enough time to do the assignment and have therefore lost marks because of late submission. Components of the assignment - TOUR1001 In writing your assignment you are required to provide a response to the following tasks.  For each task, use the headings used in the assignment details.
  1. Write an Introduction for the assignment that sets a context for your analysis of Sri Lanka as a tourism destination. You may want to provide key facts about the destination, including location, population, major cities, etc. TOUR1001
  2. Provide a political map of Sri Lanka showing its location in the region
  3. Discuss two major features of the natural environment of the destination that would be interesting to tourists.  Your discussion must show how tourists would experience these natural features.
  4. Describe the kind of society the tourists would find in Sri Lanka. Your description must show the ways in which tourists would become aware of the cultural features of society.
  5. Describe two major heritage resources of Sri Lanka and show how these resources help tourists to understand the history of the destination. TOUR1001
  6. Explain how Sri Lanka became a tourist destination.
  7. Provide an in-depth* explanation of why and how the following factors influence tourists to visit Sri Lanka:
    1. motivation
    2. ‘push’ factors (using the theory provided in your textbook and Required Readings)
    3. ‘pull’ factors
  8. Explain why Sri Lanka lagged behind in tourism development during most of the post-war era.
  9. Describe the kinds of accommodation available for tourists Sri Lanka.
  10. Explain the kinds of transport tourists would use in order to visit Sri Lanka.  This includes the transport they use to come to the destination and also the transport they use while they are at the destination.
  11. Describe the kinds of gastronomic experiences available for tourists who visit Sri Lanka.
  12. Explain the purpose of promotion of a destination and give two examples of the way Sri Lanka is promoted.
  13. Choose three different kinds of postcards of the destination you have chosen and explain how they interpret the destination you have chosen. In your answer, explain the term ‘interpretation’.
  14. Discuss the impacts tourism has had on the lives of the host society in Sri Lanka.
  15. Write a Conclusion for your project that summarises the most important points from the project.
  16. Write a list of references showing the sources you have used in your preparation of this assignment.

    • Must be resubmitted prior to due date & time to avoid receiving a late penalty.
    • The original assignment may need to be deleted before you submit another.
    • When submitting another, the file name should remain the same, otherwise it will give you 100% Turnitin similarity index. TOUR1001
  • All late submissions (without extension) will be penalised 10% per day late i.e. every 24 hours.
  • If an assignment is submitted 1 minute late or later, you will still be penalised 10%.
  • After 7 calendar days after the due date, the assignment will NO longer be accepted.
    • All requests for extensions are to be submitted through Gradebook.
    • No request for extensions are accepted through email.
    • Extensions are only granted by the course coordinator on medical grounds or unexpected or exceptional circumstances e.g. illness, death in the family, etc.
    • Extensions are not granted on issues regarding computer problems, submission problems, and several assignments/exams due on the same day/week, and/or work, etc.
Applications for extensions must be submitted through Gradebook before the due date for the assignment and supporting documentary evidence must be attached e.g. medical certificate. TOUR1001 Assignments will be returned to students approximately within three weeks (15 working days) of submission. Re-submission of work is not available in this course. TOUR1001
