Literature Review Assignment:

Question:
Reisinger (2009, p. xxv) suggests:
“The modern tourism environment is experiencing an increasing internationalisation and globalisation. Advances in technology, communication, and transportation are enhancing people’s
mobility and travel, and leading to their exposure to culturally different societies, social interactions, and cultural exchanges.”
1. Students should commence by determining an area of interest in the tourism/hospitality field. The student’s area of study should be discussed with the lecturer/tutor before the group commences their research (Weeks 1–3).
2. The student should undertake a wide search to create their field of interest. Use academic literature, newspaper articles, trade press and monologues to analyse the area and to undertake an in-depth study of the topic.
3. Seek out relevant theory for the area of interest. Students will critically analyse their own topic area and link it with the theory they have identified as being representative of their topic. The theory may come from a different field of study. For example, behaviour studies, the field of science, or sociology. For example, students might choose to consider the issue of gender in the tourism/hospitality field and could consider issues surrounding sex tourism from both destination visitation theories and mobility theory. Conversely, sex tourism could be considered from the theory of empowerment (Assessment Part 1: Literature Review
1. Create written ‘notes’ for participating members of the audience. The written notes will be a critical evaluation of the link between the theory and the topic. The notes will also clearly show the link between the topic and the basis of the visual presentation material (Assessment Part 3: Viewpoint). For example, students might create a short film of tourists using a beach for leisure, such as a picnic, and show seagulls being a nuisance by invading the area and harassing the tourists for food. The student could link this visual data to environmental concerns of sustainability, and the theory of
environmental sustainability in the tourism area. For internal students, the notes will be a Assessment | 7 handout for the participants. For external students this will take the form of a notes section produced and uploaded onto their unit site.
2. Create a film to represent your topic area (Assessment Part 2: Social Tutorial).
