The Britishers in India did not address the climatic conditions and socio-cultural needs adequately . They made buildings in India to which the common public felt alienated due to which British architecture diminished as soon as India gained Independence. Independent India choose modernism as its architectural approach with a belief that it could solve the existing problems but because of its limited interpretation of ‘function’, modern architecture seemed inadequate to many young Indian architects who wanted to fulfil the cultural and social aspirations of Indian clients. Thus, marking the beginning of critical regionalism architecture in post-colonial India. This approach led to the re-use of traditional elements as passive design techniques which could cool down a space in summers and vice-versa. These elements are further modernized to fit the present day need and for better results. 

It is important to study it because these elements provide a better thermal comfort and reduces energy consumption of a building drastically. A few examples can further elaborate the justification of the research 

• The radiant cooling system used in the Infosys Campus, Hyderabad [14] lowered the cooling loads from 440000 units to 269000 units, thus with 33% of energy savings.

• Passive ventilation with slit above window was discussed [18]. It was found that the window area of 3 m2 with 0.3 m 2 of slit/ ventilator area can decrease the temperature to 4.5?C in summer season and contributes to thermal comfort conditions

• The solar ventilation and evaporative based system for composite climate of Delhi [10] helped in maintaining the winter temperature above 4?C and the summer temperature below 2 - 3?C than the reference room. The indoor temperature remained at about 30?C even when the ambient temperature went up to 42?C

AIM 

The research proposes to study the traditional elements of Mughal architecture and how they have been modified and used  as passive techniques in the 21st century Indian architecture so as to create spaces which minimizes energy consumption , have cultural and historical significance with its location , a modern design and at the same point is functional as well.

OBJECTIVE

• The objective is to study the traditional passive design elements used in Mughal architecture 

• To understand as to why integration of contemporary with modern architecture was necessary after Independence 

• Documenting as to how traditional passive design elements were integrated with modern design during post-modern architecture .

• Studying as to how passive design techniques were modified and incorporated into modern designs by 21st century architects.

• Comparing as to how differently the traditional passive design elements were used by 3 different generation of architects in terms of their function, culture and current usage.  

SCOPE

The scope has been narrowed down in order to achieve the aim of the research paper. Therefore, the paper will be focusing on the elements of Hindu and Mughal architecture as well as analyzing British architecture in India for justification of the research. Furthermore, critical regionalism will be studied in detail in order to bridge a connection as to why the use of these elements in the post-modern as well as 21st century Indian architecture is important. This will lead us to study about the post-modern architecture in India which will eventually guide us to the 21st century passive design architecture in India.  

 LIMITATIATION 

• The study focuses primarily on one typology i.e. institutions reasons for which will be mentioned in the study.

• The study will focus only in hot and humid region of northern India 

• No one other than professional architects and students pursuing architecture will be interviewed 

METHADOLOGY

Both Primary data i.e. interviews and Secondary data i.e. case studies will be used to collect data. The procedure adopted in the data collection process will be as follows:

• Understanding culture and how it affected the architecture in India

• Architectural elements in of Indian architecture

• Understanding passive cooling design 

• Listing out and studying traditional passive design techniques used in Indian architecture i.e. jaali, courtyard, evaporative cooling 

• Research as to why British architecture diminished in India
