While there are many theories of leadership, the theories we will cover in this topic seem to have most traction in the nursing leadership literature. Feel free, however, to explore other leadership theories to expand your knowledge further.Before we go any further - perhaps consider what the term theory means. A theory is 'a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained.'When considering any theory, it is important to remember that while it may have been developed from rigorous research and have value, it may not be applicable to every situation. You may find there are aspects of a theory that you can relate to and others that do not resonate. However, theories help us to understand more about a subject or phenomenon.

The readings relating to leadership theories presented over the next few weeks provide an overview of the theories we have chosen to cover in this topic. We hope you will be challenged to explore their characteristics in depth, (as well as those of other theories if you wish), and to consider the ways in which they are similar or different.

As you work through the next few modules, think about how each leadership theory might apply to your particular leadership approach in your role as a clinician, designated manager, a clinical manager and/or a professional leader.Think about what aspects of these theories are most important in those roles. 

Consider also the implications of the culture and beliefs of your country of origin and the way these leadership theories might apply in those situations.

Transformational and transactional leadership are both well referenced in the readings for this topic. We have already identified that there are many books and articles about leadership—research papers, opinion pieces and textbooks—offering many differing views. We also want you to look beyond the literature referenced in this topic for other sources in which transformational and transactional leadership are discussed.In some of the readings, the authors are inclined to dismiss transformational leadership from a nursing perspective.
