Highlights
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this paper is to promote a more in-depth investigation of one of the current trends facing the field of therapeutic recreation.
Objectives:
Identify the various settings/populations in which RT services are provided or could be beneficial
Outline how TR can fit into a community based team
Summarize barriers in community TR practice
Discuss possible solutions to barriers in community TR practice
Description
According to current research, the field of recreation therapy continues to move from hospital to community settings (Scholl, Dieser & Davidson, 2005). Students will work in independently or in pairs to research a local organization that provides leisure and recreational programming to persons in a community setting. Students must research the organization, and make a “hypothetical” case for why the organization would benefit from adding a recreation therapist to their staff.
Directions
Working individually or in pairs, students will pick a community organization from the following list:
Students should cover the following points in the body of the essay- if relevant, and modify if necessary:
Brief history about the organization (e.g. When was it started? Who started it? Why was it started?)
Background information (e.g. affiliation, population served etc.)
Short description of current leisure/recreation programs the organization offers
Staff member in charge of leisure/recreation programming (what is their professional background?)
Why would the organization benefit from having an RT on staff?
Why would the population being served benefit from having an RT on staff? (A minimum of 5 current sources (3 of which are from a peer-reviewed journal article) are required to support this argument).
What might be some of the barriers for this organization to hiring an RT?
How might some of these barriers be resolved and/or avoided?
