Task

Description:

This assignment involves writing a preliminary business plan associated with the development of a private TR practice.  Before starting any business, it is essential to assess what you have to offer to the community and whether they need it, who your competitors are, how you will set up your company, the finances you may need, how you will market your services, and much more.  This assignment will take you through this process step by step.

Key Learning Outcomes Addressed:

  • TREC 13 – TR Small Business Development.
  • Vocational Learning Outcomes.

Directions:

1. Find the Business Plan Writer on the Futurpreneur website:

To simplify the process of writing a business plan, an online business plan writing tool developed by Futurpreneur Canada will be used to take you systematically through the process.   There are two log-in areas on the Futurpreneur site, each with very different goals. To get to the Business Plan.

2. Write your business plan:

Utilize the Futurpreneur Canada Business Plan Writer Tool  which will give you step-by-step directions on how to approach writing a business plan and what should be included in each section.  As well, there are several other resources on the Futurpreneur website, including the financial templates that you will need.

On Blackboard, there is also a Word document posted under “Resources” labelled “Futurpreneur’s Business Plan Writer Details” which lists all the sections of the business plan format you will be using, so that you can see the overall scope of the project, and many of the questions that the online tool will pose as you go along.  When actually writing, it is best to use the online tool instead of this document because further guidance is available online.

Business plans are always written in the THIRD PERSON.  The following sections must be included, unless otherwise noted.  (Additional supportive materials, such as samples of your client in-take forms, assessment documents, etc. are often included in Appendixes, but this is not necessary for TREC13):

Notes:

1. Your plan should be typed and include a cover page (with the name of your business and your contact information), page numbers and a table of contents.  The body of the writing, outside of a few bulleted lists or charts where requested, must be in full sentence form, single spaced, and in a 11- or 12-point sans serif style such as Calibri (Body).

2. Use bold headings and sub-headings that are larger than the font in the paragraphs below them to set off each section and sub-section, and enough white space between sections to make the document easy to read. The business plan will be marked for voice (writing in the third person), sentence structure, spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, consistency in formatting, layout and spacing between sections, variety of words, business-like writing and appeal.  The rubric will give you more information on the content expected.

3. When you export your business plan from Futurpreneur to Word, in order to hand in a professional document, you will need to clean up the formatting of the final document, ensure that headings are bolded and enlarged as required, spacing is consistent, full sentences are used, etc.  Hint:  Once you have created the Word document and BEFORE you begin editing, highlight all the content and click on “No Spacing” in the “Styles” toolbar in Word. You will then have complete control of the formatting.

4. Your business plan should be professional in appearance.

5. If there is a possibility that you may want to move forward with your business idea and open a practice in the future, any information submitted through this assignment, the business idea assignment or one-on-one discussions with the instructor will be kept confidential. Should you wish your instructor to sign a confidentiality form to formalize this, please prepare one and include it with the two assignments.

6. This project can be done in a team of 2.  If you choose to do this, please inform the instructor ahead of time, create a confidentiality form for each member to sign and keep signed copies for future reference.
