In order to be successful at developing a private Therapeutic Recreation (TR) practice, certain entrepreneurial skills are necessary to develop a plan, set up the business, face obstacles and follow through to success. This self-assessment will assist you with identifying where your strengths and possible limitations exist, compared to those traits generally found in Canadian entrepreneurs. 

Following the completion of the assessment, you will make an analysis regarding whether or not you think you possess enough strong entrepreneurial skills to be successful in running a private TR practice; if you think it is possible to strengthen any skills identified as limitations through professional development; if your entrepreneurial traits are strong, what other skills you believe need to be developed; and whether or not a private TR practice is a viable employment opportunity for you, once you gain some experience.

Directions:

1. Find the assessment tool: Go online and locate the Entrepreneurial Potential Self- assessment Questionnaire which is on the Business Development Bank of Canada’s website

2. Complete the questionnaire. It includes 50 statements and will take about 10 minutes to complete. For each statement, you will be asked to choose the number that best describes your opinion from four (4) options.

Note: There are no right or wrong answers and your honest opinion is what counts. It is also important to use the entire scale as much as possible, because continuously answering “2” or “3” will not allow you to fully benefit from this tool.

3. Capture your results in a Word document: The tool will compare your results to those of the mean scores of Canadian entrepreneurs and compile them under four main headings: 

• Your Results
• Your Motivations
• Your Aptitudes
• Your Attitudes 

4. Analyze and Evaluate Your Results:  

A) Your Strengths and/or Limitations Analyses: 

Under EACH of the three (3) headings below, list some of your traits as an entrepreneur as compared to the mean scores of Canadian entrepreneurs (which are indicated by a vertical line on each score line):

a. My Motivations
b. My Aptitudes
c. My Attitudes

Each section should include information on two (2) skills or traits with clear, detailed examples of either:

How they represent strengths that could assist you in starting a TR business, OR how they could be perceived as entrepreneurial limitations and could be a challenge when starting and running a private TR practice.

B) Professional Development Needs- Please List point form: Referring to any limitations identified by the assessment, discuss whether or how these limitations could be overcome through professional development activities, experience, mentoring, etc. 

C) Personal Suitability for Entrepreneurship: Share your thoughts about whether you think that you would make a good entrepreneur and private TR practice owner. To describe your personal suitability, please refer in detail to four (4) distinct points that could support or hinder your abilities to start and run a successful TR business.
