Compare two cities using TripAdvisor Hotel Data
Using the TripAdvisor website (e.g www.tripadvisor.ie) choose two cities of interest (e.g. Dublin and Paris).
Select 20 hotels from each city (sorted by distance from city centre) and record the following information for each city:
The price quoted for a room on Saturday December 12th 2020
The price quoted for a room on Saturday January 9th 2021
The hotel grade (eg. 5 star)
The total number of customers who have reviewed the hotel.
The percentage of reviewers who have visited the hotel on business.
The percentage of reviewers who have given a traveller rating of excellent.
Whether or not the hotel offers free internet (free Wifi).
1 - Enter the information into an SPSS file using the following variables
ID: An ID number for hotel (this is just an anonymised number for each hotel – e.g. numbers 1 to 40).
City: A categorical variable which is used to distinguish between the two cities.
PriceDec: Price of the room for Saturday December 12th 2020
PriceJan: Price of the room for Saturday January 9th 2020
Grade: Hotel Grade
Reviews: The total number of customers who have reviewed the hotel
Business: The percentage of reviewers who have visited the hotel on business
Excellent: The percentage of reviewers who have given a traveller rating of excellent
Wifi: The hotel has free Wifi (coded 0 = no, 1 = yes).
2 Use frequency tables to summarise the variables Grade and Wifi.
3 .Identify the distribution (approximately normal or skewed) of the variables: PriceDec, PriceJan, Reviews, Business and Excellent. Give appropriate measures of centrality and dispersion for the variables in each city.
4.Use the appropriate statistical tests to test whether the two cities differ on Price, Reviews, Business and Excellent.
5.For each city test whether prices are lower for booking the January 9th 2020 date compared to booking December 12th 2020.
Write a short report on your findings. Include in this report the summary measures, any charts of interest and the results of the statistical tests.
