This ECA is an individual project that requires you to write a research proposal in an area (or a combination of areas) of your choice below:

• Speech Act Theory
• Politeness Theory
• Conversation Analysis
• Reference and/or Co-reference

Your research proposal must be not only theoretically motivated but also based on an empirical study that incorporates a sample analysis and discussion of some data. This can be original data collected by you or borrowed from other sources found in the public domain (which you must acknowledge). Specifically, the research proposal must

• Identify a suitable research problem/issue and state it precisely
• Explain the significance of the identified research problem/issue clearly in relation to appropriate contexts
• Differentiate between the use of different theoretical constructs, and assess the relevance of specific theory/theories to your research topic wherever possible
• Provide a sample analysis and discussion of the data
• Appraise critically the application of the theory/theories that you have adopted in your discussion
