Seminar Worksheet Week 7. Two-Way Mixed ANOVA Design (aka Split Plot)

As we have seen over previous weeks Analysis of Variance can be used in a number of different research designs. This seminar will focus on Two-Way Mixed ANOVA. The term  Two-Way' gives you an indication of how many Independent Variables you have in your experimental design, the term 'Mixed' tells you about the nature of these variables.  Previously you have worked through Two Way designs where the Independent variables were Between Groups or within Participant designs (with two IVs). In the Mixed design,  there are two IVs but one is between groups lV and the other is within Participant IV.

We will work through an example of a Mixed Design in this week's seminar as follows:

A researcher wanted to test for an intervention that would enhance student's confidence in a  statistics course. The researcher organized two Intervention Workshops, half the students attended a workshop that was focused on improving Math's Ability the other half of the students attended a workshop focused on general Confidence Building skills.

All students filled in a 'Fear of Statistics' questionnaire at the beginning (Time 1) of their workshop and then filled in the same questionnaire at the end of the workshop (Time 2). The researcher hypothesized that following workshop attendance there would be a reduction in participants mean scores on the Fear of Statistics questionnaire, furthermore, it was also predicted that mean scores on the Fear of Statistics scale would differ for those students that attended a Math's  Ability workshop compared with students that attended a Confidence Building workshop.

Task 1 What is the Design

Task 2 What are the two Levels of IV1 is IV 1  Is IV 1 between or within participants IV/factor?

Task 3 What are the two Levels of IV2 is IV 2  Is IV 2 a between or within participants IV/factor?

Task 4 Fill in the cells of the table below with the IVs and levels (use the template that was  provided in your lecture slides for Week 7 Mixed Anova to help you fill in the details for the  table below
