The aim of this assessment is to assess your knowledge and performance in compiling and producing an energy sector detailed report. It includes planning; identifying information sources; collecting, analysing, and formatting information applicable to the electrotechnology industry in developing and obtaining approval for energy sector report. This unit is typically for technicians working as part of a product/application/service research and/or design, development, and implementation team. This generally involves working closely with a range of management and production/operations personnel and requires balancing the business and technical sides of the research process. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Specific Task Instructions
The instructions and the criteria in the tasks and activities will be used by your Teacher/Assessor to determine if you have satisfactorily completed this assessment event. Use these instructions as a guide to ensure you demonstrate the required knowledge and skills.
Part 1: Compile and produce an energy sector detailed report
For this project, you will compile a report on equipment failure and equipment upgrade in the energy sector. Your report will be based around the scenario.
As part of this assessment, you must submit the following to your assessor:
- This assessment document with answers to all questions and tables.
- An energy sector detailed report as a separate word document.
Your report must include detail for all sections highlighted in bold in the following list and indicate all other sections (not highlighted in bold) with headings only.
Your report should be structured as follows:
- Cover page
- Table of contents
- Abstract (blank)
- Introduction (maximum one page)
- Results and conclusions
- Acknowledgments (blank)
- Bibliography (blank)
- Appendices (if required).
Please use page numbers, titles and numbers for tables and charts, and make sure to review and spellcheck before submitting.
A report can take on a variety of layouts. Use the preferred proforma/template or style that your assessor prefers. Once completed you will need to submit the report and assessment checklist to your Teacher/Assessor for marking.
Scenario
NSW Fair Trading has asked you to write a report on equipment failure and upgrade in the energy sector with a focus on failing capacitors. NSW Fair Trading provided you with a range of data to analyse and present in your report. They also asked you to conduct a survey on the topic and research additional data from the internet to add to your report.
Task 1: Identify Energy Sector Report Requirements
- Identify any work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health safety (OHS) requirements and workplace procedures related to report writing. Consider the work area you will be working in, this could be an office at your home, the library or TAFE campus, and identify any hazards and risks in your work area. In Table 2, list at least 3 risks and hazards and add control measures you can apply throughout the project to mitigate these.
- Review the task instructions and communicate with your assessor to determine report requirements. Identify and discuss the report scope and parameters with your assessor, for example, using first- or third-person perspective, use of I or we, use of present or past tense. Identify relevant person/s to assist you in the compilation of the report. This will be your assessor, but you may receive assistance from other persons, for example, a workplace supervisor or other students in your class.
- Develop a one-page, preliminary report brief. Your report brief must include:
- a brief introduction of the topic and a clearly stated aim.
- all scenarios and requirements.
- a brief or summary of the parameters you will use.
- a paragraph of the impact on your report on related works.
- names of everyone assisting you.
- Once you receive feedback on the preliminary report brief, review your report writing techniques. Adopt any feedback on your report writing techniques and resubmit the brief.
Task 2: Results and Discussion
For the results and conclusions section, you will analyse and compile research information for your final report.
You must structure the results and conclusions section of your report into 3 distinct sub-sections indicated by the following headings:
- “2.1 Analysis and presentation of data sets provided”
- “2 Collection, analysis, and presentation of data from a questionnaire”
- “3 Analysis and presentation of data sourced from the internet”
Include all task numbers as outlined in the task instructions throughout the results and discussion section of your report.
Analysis and presentation of data sets provided
For the first sub-section, you will analyse different data sets using statistical methods and create graphs and charts that you must include in the ‘Results and conclusions section of your report. Each graph/chart must be presented as a Figure in your report, and you must provide a brief, written summary for each Figure describing the main trend/s (less than <50>
- The data set in Table 3 represents the results of a fictional analysis of the service life of 30 instances of 3 different types of power supply in many installations.
- Produce a frequency table for the service life of each power supply. Show all in a common table and express in 5-year intervals.
- Produce a histogram for the service life of the power supplies based on the frequency table.
- Discuss the service life of the 3 power supplies. Discuss the general shape of a histogram. Provide some clarification as to why the service life histograms and frequency tables may look like this (for example, bathtub plot, preventative maintenance, installation conditions, and so on).
- Given the data provided which type of power supply would you recommend? Justify your answer.
Task 3: Develop Energy Sector Report
During Task 2, you should have completed the results and conclusions section of your report.
- Now, compile the remaining sections in accordance with workplace policies and procedures and add them to your report.
Create your report using a word processor:
- in A4 format
- use size 12 font for the body of the report
- use a larger font for headings and subheadings
- provide page numbers throughout the document and word count at the foot of the final report page.
- For the introduction section of your report, you must:
- include a brief introduction of the topic: equipment failures and upgrades, with a focus on capacitors.
- include a clearly stated
- identify scenarios/requirements in consultation with your assessor. Reference and discuss any relevant industry regulations and job requirements as well as national and international standards that apply to the type of equipment discussed.
- determine criteria from other related works impacting on the report development from relevant sources. Research at least one study on the lifespan of capacitors. Add a paragraph on this to the introduction section describing the main findings of the study.
