Smart Homes: Smart Building Automation & Control Systems

By year 2045, it is expected that around 6 billion people will live in cities. Such a scenario will lead to an unprecedented need of energy consumption within urban areas. To be prepared for such a prospect, recent years have seen the increasing digitisation of our urban environments.  The world’s leading technology firms are focused on developing active control systems based on the use of a network of sensors to monitor not only energy consumption and reduce CO2 output within buildings but also improve living spaces through better security.

Problem Statement

While more and more Internet of Things (IoT) devices (sensors, actuators, etc.) are finding their ways into our homes, the need to store, access and interpret the data from these devices is become an urgent issue, mainly when there is a need to provide for real-time monitoring of activities happening within the living spaces being considered.

As part of this coursework, you will need to develop an s/w system (using C language) that:

(1) Reads data from sensor files.
(2) Controls the state of devices (turns them ON or OFF)
(3) Calculates energy consumption per day. Energy consumption data is then written to an Energy log (Energy.txt).
(4) Displays the state of the devices at a specific time of the day.
(5) Monitors each device type individually (irrespective of location) (for example provide the state of all Lights in the three locations mentioned).
(6) Monitors each location individually (i.e. displays the states of all devices in a particular location.
(7) Writes the state of devices in a file on an hourly basis in three different files.

Deliverables are as follows:
(I) A report containing the following: a) Description of the problem b) A structure chart showing the design of your system c) Well-commented codes d) Unit and systems tests using snapshots of displays from standard output. e) References
(II) Logbook showing workings (code versioning, problems and resolutions, output and observations).
(III) Soft-copy of code that will be assessed through a ‘Code-Review’ process.
