Intrnal Code: 1ACAA Security Analysis Step 1: Email the instructor (namvar@berkeley.edu) to be assigned a public company and you will be sent the ticker symbol. The ticker symbol is the stock symbol that is used to trade the company’s common stock. Include all the full names of your group members and indicate the course number in your email. Step 2: Company and Industry Analysis. Refer to the handout “Note on Corporate Strategy.” For this section of the report, please include statistics and data on the industry of the company. In addition, you can create a pro forma statement (forecasting cash flows, sales, expenses, etc.) to use in step 4 for the equity valuation of the equity. Step 3: Financial ratio analysis of the accounting information. Do the financial ratio analysis according to the following list of ratios below (not all ratios need to be used directly). You are allowed to look up these ratios as long as you properly cite your source.
  • Current Ratio
  • Quick Ratio
  • Return on Assets
  • Asset Turnover
  • Net Profit Margin
  • Return on Equity
  • PE Ratio
  • Price to Book Ratio
  • Total Debt to Equity
  • Inventory Turnover
  • Operating Profit Margin
  • Total Asset Turnover
  • Fixed Asset Turnover
  • Debt Ratio
  • Times Interest Earned
Step 4: Equity Valuation. Choose one valuation model (or more) discussed in this course to value the stock of the company. You can refer to the handout “Corporate Valuation and Market Multiples.” Support your forecasts and explain your reasoning. For example, explain why you chose a certain P/E ratio. Based on the information you have gathered, you need to formulate an opinion of the company (Buy, Sell, Hold). The opinion must be supported with as much data as possible. The more, the better, as long as the sources are provided. You are required to present data and statistics on the industry of the company. In addition, you can compare the company with 2 or 3 competitors to support your opinion. Include as many statistics, graphs, and charts in this section as possible with the accurate source (cite the website or book). Sample reports are posted. I do not expect the same level of analysis, but it’s a good reference. At the minimum, you should include the following sections which may be in the annual report or on the company website:
  • Company Description
  • Industry Analysis
  • Product Mix
  • Risk Factors
  • SWOT (Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats) Analysis
  • Investment Thesis/Conclusion (your opinion)
