Engineering Assignment Writing:

Task: tidal A 1.5 MW seabed tidal flow turbine is shown above. It includes an underwater pitching system for the blades and a yaw mechanism to turn the turbine into the flow direction. The output for various tidal flows is given in the manufacturer’s specification table reproduced below: It is planned to place these devices on the seabed in a location off China where the typical flow rate over a day is given by the data in the file REG_CW1_Data1.xlsx The time t is the time measured in seconds, and v has units m s -1 . Section 1 (a) Describe the principle of operation of the turbine. (b) Explain how the flow rate will change with tide height. (c) Calculate the efficiency of the turbine over the flow rates shown in the manufacturer’s specification table. (d) Using spreadsheet software calculate the average power of a single turbine subject to the tidal flow given by the equation. (e) Outline how the system could be modelled for the variation in tidal flow over the year using dedicated modelling software such as Matlab. You may take the density of seawater to be 1,025 kg m -3 . Section 2 (a) Explain the benefit of adding energy storage. (b) List the types of storage options possible. (c) Calculate the storage capacity required to ensure the system could produce constant output over the cycle. You should assume a realistic efficiency for the storage mechanism. (d) Select the best storage option for this application. Explain the reasons for your choice. Section 3 Underwater turbines present significant challenges in terms of installation, control, reliability and maintenance. Produce a short referenced report exploring ONE of the main challenges in these areas. You should consider the effect these challenges have on the commercialization of tidal flow devices, and what the marine energy industry is doing to address the issue. The report should be about 1,500 words in length.
