The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the world tremendously and the ill-effects have put light on the importance of one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals - the goal three which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all of all ages (United Nations, 2015). The goal aims at 9 targets with a collective purpose to reduce deaths and provide health and well-being to one and all across the world. Another highlight of the goal is its focus on 'for all for all ages', hence highlighting the value of the common good. The philosophy of common good suggests each individual has access to resources to fulfill their needs and lead fulfilling lives, regardless of their social and individual differences (Caritas, 2020). However, with the death rate increasing exponentially each day globally and increased health issues due to COVID, the SDG goal three seems to be compromised post the pandemic. Khetrapal and Bhatia (2020) show how despite the considerable progress made globally by developed as well as developing nations towards this goal, the current status lies on shallow grounds. Post the pandemic, the health and well-being systems globally have been shaken. Due to overemphasis on the novel virus and shift of attention as well as resources from existing diseases and healthcare issues, the progress of SDG goal three concerning making healthcare a common good is hampered. The current status of the goal is hence weak and not very promising for the future (UNESCAP, 2020).
I aim to work towards providing healthcare to the geriatric community on a global scale, as a future medical professional. On the local level, I aim to work with the aboriginal communities, especially the aboriginal elderly. I aim to ensure that the elderly across the globe, especially those belonging to communities that have generations of trauma and are more vulnerable to diseases and death (Finlay & Wenitong, 2020), lead healthy lives. However, there seem to be multiple challenges and obstacles in the path of realizing the common good for these communities, hampering the progress of SDG-3. 
Two of the major challenges that enable the exclusion of the elderly from most healthcare facilities are a common belief that their lives are less valuable just because they are ‘anyway going to die soon’ (Snell, 2020) and the wartime triage post the pandemic. Despite the philosophy of the common good, healthcare facilities around the world are focusing only on those who have a higher chance of survival. People have been seen to joke about the deaths of the elderly, hence trivializing the value of their health and dehumanizing them (Held, 2020). To progress towards SDG-3 and create the realization of the common good, the need is to sensitize and spread awareness about these issues globally and locally.
Another major challenge to the realization of healthcare as the common good is the disparity of resources to meet the SDG-3 in rural and urban areas. Poverty plays a significant role in this disparity. While the principle of common good highlights care for the greatest good for all without leaving anybody (Catholic Social Teaching, 2020), the urban-rural distinction makes the common good realization difficult. The aboriginal elderly is especially prone to ill-effects due to lack of healthcare services in their regions and inaccessibility to resources (Australian Government, 2021). This obstacle can however be managed by efficient government decisions and appropriate distribution of resources. 
The social and cultural factors also play a significant role. Stereotypes, biases, discrimination, inter-group hatred, etc. all prevent vulnerable groups to be included in the common good. Jeung (2020) highlights how COVID discrimination of the elderly has been problematic in various contexts like healthcare accessibility. Aboriginal elderly has also been excluded greatly due to the intersection of their age as well as their cultural history, which makes them even more vulnerable to discrimination and excludes them from efficient clinical practice (Goodman et al., 2017). To tackle these issues, there is a need for sensitization and awareness programs globally as well as strict actions against such social injustice. 
The realization of the common good, especially in times like today, hence becomes essentially important so that every individual is taken together towards the fulfillment of SDG-3 good health and wellbeing and has access to a healthy and happy life.
