• the conflict has been going on for many years;
• according to World Vision (June 21, 2019) “healthcare centers and hospitals, schools, utilities, and water and sanitation systems are damaged or destroyed”;
• In the words of the head of the U.N. Refugee Agency "we are witnessing an extended failure of political action by states to find a solution to this war... an increasing
internationalization of the conflict" (with a number of countries now involved in the crisis) (Gavlak 2018, np).
• The United Nations Security Council has demanded an end to “the indiscriminate use of weapons in populated areas” though thousands of civilians have died, and
continue to die in the conflict (BBC, 2016, np).

• Fr. Emanuel Youkhana, “archimandrite of the Assyrian Church of the East”, has called for an end to the war and for urgent international aid: “battle cannot be a path to
peace" (Gavlak 2018, np)
• Human rights advocates have identified the indiscriminate bombing of civilians as the major cause of the crisis in Afrin, after it was invaded in 2018 (Gavlak 2018, np)
• The BBC has reported that by 2016 almost five million people had to leave Syria because of the conflict, mostly women and children – “one of the largest refugee
exoduses in recent history” (BBC 2016, np)
