Here is what I wrote on the first page of our course syllabus:

Our course adopts a slightly unconventional approach to the study of American government and politics. By “slightly unconventional,” I mean, in part, that we will not use a standard US government textbook, most of which follow the same basic formula, namely, one that examines the Constitution, the “three branches,” federalism, parties, public opinion, public policy, etc. Much of this material is already familiar to many students from their high school days. Although we’re not going to ignore these topics, we are going to examine them indirectly through a political science (and sociological) lens focusing on social class and class power. “Class and power are terms”, as G. William Domhoff (author of one of our assigned textbooks) puts it, “that make Americans a little uneasy.” The reason, especially when the two terms are combined, is clear: class power sounds a little radical and even Marxist. And, in the US, most citizens have been taught that Marxism is a dangerous and evil ideology. Yet, there really isn’t anything to fear. In the context of this course, a class power approach is simply a framework of analysis that gives us a different (and not necessarily radical) way of thinking about, analyzing, and understanding politics in the United States. You may not agree with the approach, which is perfectly fine, but even if you strongly disagree, it’s crucial to learn about different and unconventional ways of understanding the world in which we live. It is this framework of analysis that makes this course somewhat unconventional.

Essay Prompt With the foregoing in mind, I want you, first, to carefully consider the question, "Is the 'class power' approach a valuable and even invaluable framework for thinking about, analyzing, and understanding politics in the United States"?  And, second, to write a critical essay* that answers the question.
If your answer is "yes," you need to provide a thorough explanation of your reasoning, which you must also support with concrete examples.
If your answer is "no," you also need to provide a thorough explanation of your reasoning, which you must support with concrete examples.
IMPORTANT! Whatever your answer, a significant portion of your essay must focus on a discussion of Domhoff's Who Rules America? At the same time, you are required to incorporate a discussion of Chomsky's Who Rules the World? as well as the material on the significance of race in American politics (e.g., while you may agree that the class power approach is valuable, you might also argue that one of its weaknesses is the marginalization of race).
What is a critical essay (analysis)? (Make sure your read this, too)

The first point to keep in mind is that a "critical" essay or analysis doesn't mean that you disagree with an argument or position; rather it means that instead of accepting or rejecting someone else's argument or ideas automatically or without much thought, you provide a thoughtful evaluation that discusses both the strengths and the weaknesses. (Enlaces a un sitio externo.): "Performing a critical analysis does not necessarily involve finding fault with a work [or argument]. On the contrary, a thoughtful critical analysis may help us understand the interaction of the particular elements that contribute to a work's power and effectiveness. For this reason, critical analysis is a central component of academic training ...". Interestingly, the author was talking about a critical analysis of art, but exact same principle applies to a critical analysis of non-fiction writing and film.
In order to do critical analysis, though, you need to start off by identifying the author or creator's main idea or thesis. You must then consider how the author or creator supports their idea or thesis with evidence. "As soon as you have the main thesis and the supporting ideas," as another source puts (Enlaces a un sitio externo.), "it is time to assess whether the author was successful in proving the thesis."
