On the 6th February 1840, under the command of Captain Hobson, HMS Herald trained 14 of it cannons on the little town of Waitangi in New Zealand’s Bay of islands. Under this gaze Captain Hobson negotiated an agreement with 40 of the combined Maori Chiefs from the top of the North Island. The agreement was for them to cede sovereignty of Aotearoa (New Zealand ) to the English Crown. Hobson then sent the treaty to the other Chiefs in the North Island to be signed.
