Understanding Creativity - Cohesive Argument - English Paper Writing Assessment Answer
Assessment Task:

Writing Goals:

Your paper should demonstrate components of a cohesive argument while designing an insightful response to the assignment.

The paper should also be able to analyze and synthesize information by using quotes and personal experience. I do want you to try and integrate at least one, but no more than two quotes, into your paper. This is purposeful, so don’t use more than two quotes.

  • Your ?audience? has read and understood the same class material as you and are in the process of forming an opinion. ?How will your paper persuade them?
  • Your ?audience? is in the “middle” ideologically of the discussion, so be sure to temper your discussion in order to be persuasive; thus, your paper is an argument, so take time to consider building a reasonable appeal.

Introduction to the Assignment

The position of most of our reading is that creativity, though in the abstract seems valued is usually rejected by society. We find this in our desire to avoid failure at all costs, even in our
efforts to not attempt something.

What is your position on this argument? Do you believe that creativity is valued? Why or why not?

  • Write a paper that establishes your position on creativity by using one valuable experience that illustrates your point. This could be how you solved a problem or what you did that seemed to be unique to the circumstance.
  • Spend time creating a context for the discussion.
  • The paper can also examine something you might want to accomplish in using your own sense of creativity. An example of this might be how you might want to repurpose, recycle or reuse something on a broad scale to challenge or have to reconsider our expectations.

The argument is the focus of the discussion and the example only serves to validate that point. If you have a set of experiences that are related, you may use that instead, as long as the argument remains the center of our point.

Though this paper will have some narrative elements, this is NOT a “narrative” assignment.

The focus is for you to create a basic argument that proves your thesis.

Important Ideas to Consider:

  • Brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm. Be creative in generating ideas. Don’t settle.
  • Assume that your reader has read the same class material as you and understood it. Don’t feel the need to summarize or repeat ideas. Work from your ideas and build from there.
  • Remember that other folks will be writing on the same general topic as you, so Keep your ideas small and focused. Avoid broad sweeping ideas.
