The purpose of this case study is to provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of global maternal health principles that have been applied to one specific country ( ).

In module two, you will find a list of 30+ countries that you can select from, together with a snapshot of maternal health in each of those countries. The list of countries that you can choose from includes both those that reached and did not reach the 2015 Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5. Should you wish to write a case study report on a country that is not listed, this will be very acceptable but please do discuss your rationale with me (Elaine, your course convenor) before commencing work on the case study. In relation to the country you have selected, your case study will demonstrate your knowledge of:

• gender [in]equity, maternal health, morbidity and mortality;
• how social determinants of health, including gender equity / inequity (note: depending on the country selected, gender equity or gender inequity will be your focus) have enabled or been a barrier to improving maternal health;
• Strategies used by your profession in the past and proposed for the future to enhance maternal health.

Learning outcomes:

• Analyse the social determinants of global maternal health, utilising a gender analysis framework;
• Make high-level, independent judgements to identify enablers and barriers to enhancing global maternal health.

Task description:

You are required to select a country (or region within that country) of the world that is of most interest to you. In the context of that country, use the relevant literature and write a 2,500 word case study essay which reports on:

• the current state of gender [in]equity, maternal health, morbidity and mortality;
• three to five specific social determinants of health that have impacted on gender [in]equity, maternal health, morbidity and mortality;
• strategies used by your profession in the past to address each of the specific social determinants you have reported on;
• two of the United Nations Sustainability Goals, 2016-2030 and how strategies used by your profession are being used to enhance maternal health in the context of the two goals selected;

Specific recommendations on how gender inequity, where it exists can be addressed by your profession to improve maternal health.
