Highlights
Part 1: Unit of Work identification and justification
Your initial task is to decide on a science understanding area that you want to teach. You must choose topics related to Chemical Sciences or Earth and Space Sciences of the Science Understanding (SU) strand of the Australian Curriculum and target a year level of your choice (Kindergarten – year 6. Early Childhood students MUST choose an age group within the Early Years age range (up to age 8)). You are to locate (or design) an existing unit of work (UoW) designed for this year level and SU focus. The UoW can come from a school, Scootle, or another source – be sure to acknowledge the source. Choose carefully, as you will be required to teach this UoW for AT2.
For your chosen age group and science sub-stand, the UoW must aim to develop conceptual understanding, incorporate representational challenges, and inquiry strategies to engage students by seeing the relevance of science to their lives. Thus, the learning outcomes should include at least one from each of the science understanding, inquiry and human endeavour strands (or at least two outcomes from the EYLF). It should also identify any appropriate cross curricula priorities and general capabilities. You should also be able to explain your understanding of the science behind the UoW.
The UoW must encompass a sequence of at least 7 lessons across the 5Es framework. (Note: a unit designed for EC students would concentrate on activities in the Engage, Explore and Explain phases only). You must share your chosen/proposed UoW with your tutor and they must approve it, prior to its implementation (Mandatory Engagement task – end week 3).
Part 1: Further develop and justify your unit plan using the 5E lesson sequence planner – transfer your UoW into this template. Use the worked example to provide more detail/summarise the individual lessons in the sequence. The goals of each lesson should reflect the stage of the 5Es in which it is embedded and address some aspect of the unit learning outcomes.
Part 2: Informed by the literature and using the template to guide you, Identify and critique:
