Task:

Essay Questions

“Many animals perish during Australian bushfires. They suffer terribly. Therefore God does not exist.” Carefully expand this into an argument from the problem of Evil, against the existence of God. Does the argument succeed?

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Your choice of essay question affects which topics you are permitted to select and answer on your final exam. On the exam, you will need to answer two essay questions from among these three groups of questions: (1) theory of knowledge, (2) phil. mind, (3) phil. religion. You will be precluded from writing an exam answer on a topic the group that you’ve already written on for your research essay. (For example, if your research essay was on phil. religion, then you may not write on phil. religion for the exam. If your research essay was on theory of knowledge, then you may not write on theory of knowledge for the exam. Every student will need to write one of their two exam answers on a question in theory of knowledge.)

Group 1: Philosophy of Religion.
1) Design (Teleological) Argument: EITHER: Consider the following statements: “Look at the human eye. It cannot have come about by accident. So God must exist.” “The universe is like a machine. It cannot have come about by accident. So God must exist”. Carefully expand ONE of these statements into a teleological argument for the existence of God. Make sure you identify it as the correct version (as Hume or Paley’s). Then critically assess the argument. OR Outline a variant of the New Design Argument. Does it succeed?
2) Ontological Argument: “God is the greatest conceivable being. Greatness includes existence. Therefore God exists”. Expand this into an ontological argument for the existence of God. Then critically assess the argument.
3) The problem of Evil: “Many animals perish during Australian bushfires. They suffer terribly. Therefore God does not exist.” Carefully expand this into an argument from the Problem of Evil, against the existence of God. Does the argument succeed?

Question: Suppose that the teleporter always works flawlessly, and as intended; it never breaks down, and nothing ever goes wrong. In this respect, it is even more
reliable than air travel. Is there any reason someone might have to avoid using this mode of transportation? Is apprehension over using the teleporter well-founded and rational? Explain with reference to the debate over personal identity.
