Introduction

In this lab, we'll be configuring the general purpose input output peripheral to read inputs from push buttons and set LED outputs. We'll be using the LEDs and buttons available on the Education Booster pack to read button inputs and set various LEDs.

Objective

This lab will exercise our knowledge of the GPIO peripheral by changing the color of the multicolor LED on the EDUMKII board by pressing a button. Each button press will change the LED between 3 colors; red, blue, and green; in that order, cyclically (when the button is pressed on green it goes back to red, and continues the cycle).

Driving the LEDs Now that we've determined which GPIO pins drive the LEDs on the EDUMKII board, we can write code to control them. Create a new project in CCS to write this code. In this project, we will need to add an infinite while loop, to ensure our board doesn't stop running the application, and a few functions to support our application.

1. Create a function for initializing the GPIO peripheral. This function should set all appropriate pin directions and initial values (low or high output voltages, input pull up resistors, etc.).

2. Create functions that will set the LED to one of the colors specified by the lab objective. (red, blue, and green)

3. Add a call to your GPIO init function near the beginning of your main() function

Once you have implemented these functions, even if you are very confident in your coding abilities, now is a good time to test it out. Inside your code, give a call to one of your LED color setting functions to make sure they work. Build and debug a test code for each color to ensure functionality. It is important to periodically test along the way, especially before putting the entire application together, to make the debugging process easier.
