Experiment: Yeast and carbon dioxide
Objectives
This experiment aims to work with yeast and to test how different variables affect the production of carbon dioxide (a product of yeast fermentation). Unlike previous experiments, you will have to make more decisions about your experiment and adjust the method to ensure you collect suitable data.

· refine an experimental procedure and take careful measurements
· collect and record data
· explain how the variables tested have impacted on the results collected

Key Materials
· Baker’s yeast
· White sugar and other sources of energy for yeast
· Conical flasks or clear bottles (any type with a neck e.g. water, soft drink, beer bottles)
· Funnel
· Balloons
· Soft tape measure (or string and tape measure/ruler)
· Digital scales
· Stirring rod (plastic, glass, or metal. Not wood)
· Measuring cylinder (or other measuring device)
· Thermometer
· Other materials e.g. ice, hot water, tap water, large container
Safety Considerations
a. Hot water presents a scalding hazard. Ensure that hot water does not come into contact with skin, clothing, or any non-heatproof materials.
b. Ensure electrical equipment is inspected and maintained before use. Electrical equipment not in good working order should not be used.
c. Any containers used for hot water near boiling point must be heatproof. Only metal, ceramic or heatproof glass (e.g. Pyrex) containers should be used to avoid fracture or cracking.
d. Remember to handle glassware with care and inspect prior to use for chips or defects.
e. Do not use a microwave to heat pure water. A kettle should be used. Hot tap water may be sufficiently warm for this experiment.
