Essay Instructions:
For the research and writing portion of this course, you are required to write essays.  In an effort to provide students with flexibility, students will choose from the essay options listed below to fulfill this requirement. All essay options have an assigned length requirement, source requirement, and points value.  You can complete as many essays as you wish.

  1. Follow the specified length requirement. (Footnotes and the bibliography do NOT count toward the minimum length requirement. A proportional deduction will be taken for essays that either fail to meet or exceed the length requirement.)
  2. You must use scholarly sources to fulfill the source requirement. You will lose points for all non-scholarly sources used in your essay. While you may use assigned readings in your essay, these do NOT count toward the source requirement. (Review the Guide to Evaluating Sources document in the Course Introduction module.)
  3. All citations must be inaccurate Chicago style. (Review the Chicago Manual of Style in the Course Introduction module.)
  4. All essays must be typed and double-spaced.
  5. You must use Times New Roman font, and all margins must be set to one-inch.
  6. Your heading should include the following information single-spaced in the top left corner of your first page – first and last name, HIS 101, date of submission. There is no need to put the instructor’s name or any other information.
  7. Your title should be centered, in plain 12-point text, with appropriate words capitalized – no title page is necessary.
  8. Do not use contractions (don’t, can’t, won’t, etc.) or slang/jargon/clichés (‘raining like cats and dogs’, ‘my two cents’, ‘in the dog house’, etc.).
  9. Always write in the third person (he, she, it, they, etc.) and NEVER use first or second person perspective at any time!  This is an egregious infraction in historical writing.
  10. Write in the past tense, as all of the content you discuss in your essays happened in the past.
  11. Check to Spell and proofread!
