Assessment
Assignment Activities
There are 2 parts to this assignment.
Part A is a Research Report. Investigate programming concepts, WWW, HTML, data modelling and XML. Prepare a report on your findings.
Part B is a Project Report. Develop your application, create your user and developer documentation, and create a report to document your progress.
Use the appropriate software program to develop your documents or files. You must upload your document in the required format. Do not compress the document(s) when uploading it/them for assessment. They must be uploaded as individual files.
Preamble
You are on the Development team of a consulting company named ‘SkillagelT’. You should look at Skillage I.T.’s website to get an overview of the company
The client, Wood Stocks, is a small business of eleven staff and is a retail store providing wooden toys to the general public. It has an urgent requirement to
automate its daily stock control function.
You have already designed and built an application to automate their stock count function as much as possible. Other customers for the business may be coming online, and it has been deemed prudent to format the output file (a flat comma delimited file) from the previous project as a suitably formatted XML file.
Part A - Using XML in Progromming Project: Research Report
Instructions
Before you begin using XML in your program, you should conduct some research into this area and formulate a report to show your understanding. Research and
document the following: (minimum 500 words)
l. Describe basic programming concepts including structure, variables, loops, controls and syntax.
2. Explain what data modelling is and how it is used to document software design.
3. Describe the main features and services of the World Wide Web (WWW).
4. Define what web-services architecture and platform elements are.
5. Outline commonly used items in hypertext markup language (HTML).
6. Describe the features and characteristics of XML and explain why we use XML with information systems.
Part B - Using XML in Progromming Project: Project Report
Instructions
You will use your newly gained XML programming knowledge to extend the C#
Programming Project previously completed, which read the initial csv text file into memory and displayed it in the application.
i. You must extend your Windows Forms application:
a. Once the csv file is loaded and displayed in your application, you need to convert the file into a new file that is formatted as a valid XML file. The structure of the file is completely at your discretion.
b. Allow the user to select one of two styles for the XML file. You are to have two buttons in the application that will apply a different style sheet to the output and display the output in a web browser.
c. You must submit all solution files required to run the application within Visual Studio in a zip file, so that your trainer may run the application for assessment.
2. You need to create User documentation — An easy to read user manual with images on how to use the application. This will allow your trainer to run and assess your program. You can extend your user documentation from the previous project. Minimum 50o words.
3. You need to create Developer documentation — A description of the application, a code block breakdown (please comment your code identifying the function of the code blocks) and any details that developers who may edit your application in the future may require. You can extend your developer documentation from the previous project. Minimum Soo words.
4. You are to formulate a report based on the requirements below showing examples of your work. Your report should be minimum 75o words.
a. Describe how you gathered and analysed relevant information, data and documents.
b. Include imapes of your XML document and outline the hierarchy and tree structure used. Give reasons for the XML schema you have chosen for the output.
c. Show and explain examples of your code for the following:
i. Transform the csv file into an XML document
ii. Access the XML document
iii. Traverse data in the XML document
iv. Modify data in the XML document
v. Delete data in the XML document
vi. Transform the XML into a viewable web pape.
d. Demonstrate formatting the XML document using Visual Studio styling tools
